AASU/Memorial to Dedicate New Health Clinic, Expansion of Compass Point

Savannah, GA—September 30, 2003—For the first time in its history, Armstrong Atlantic State University can offer students a more convenient place to seek treatment for their illnesses. A new medical facility, the University Health Clinic, has been established on campus as part of an expansion of its student residence community, Compass Point. The health clinic is managed by Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC).

In celebration of the expansion, AASU will host a ceremony on October 8 to dedicate a new facility—Student Affairs@Compass Point—that houses the University Health Clinic, Career Services, and The Counseling Center. Also being dedicated are four new buildings that double the number of student residents to 560.

AASU President Thomas Z. Jones and Robert A. Colvin, President and CEO of Memorial Health, will make presentations during the event beginning at 1 p.m. in front of the health clinic. Following the ceremony, tours will be given of Student Affairs@Compass Point, the University Health Clinic, and resident apartments at Compass Point. The ceremony is part of the university's fall festival, "Celebrate AASU Day," which will begin at noon.

"The university has experienced a 10 percent increase in enrollment over last year bringing the total number of students to more than 6,600," said Jones. "The expansion of Compass Point and increased student services are helping keep pace with this surge in enrollment."

"Memorial Health is dedicated to the health and well-being of everyone in our community, and we are pleased to be a part of this partnership with Armstrong Atlantic State University to provide healthcare to the university's student population," said Colvin.

The University Health Clinic offers medical services for students, faculty, and staff at Armstrong Atlantic. The clinic hours are Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Physical exams, pap smears and pelvic exams, immunizations, treatment of minor injuries, HIV and STD testing, and other services will be provided. On Wednesdays, a Women's Clinic is offered to address the unique needs of women, who make up 70% of the university's population. The health clinic accepts most private insurance and provides a discount for students without health insurance.

The Counseling Center, Career Services, and the PREP Program are also housed at Student Affairs@Compass Point. Counselors are available by appointment for personal counseling at no cost to students. Career Services continues to offer its full range of services: career counseling, topical workshops, resume assistance, and career days. PREP, a college preparation program for middle and high school students, is a collaboration with several area middle and high schools.
