AASU to Celebrate International Week

Savannah, GA — Armstrong Atlantic State University will celebrate International Week November 18-22 with a broad array of special events.

Monday, November 18
The week will begin Monday, November 18, with a talk by Alejandro Gomez on "U.S. and Latin Relations During the Cold War" at 10:00 A.M. in University Hall, Room I56. Gomez is a Fulbright Scholar from Buenos Aires, Argentina who is in residence at Coastal Georgia Community College.

From 11:30 A.M. To 1:30 P.M., Recycled Percussion will perform in the University Hall Plaza. This musical concert, performed on castoff items, is sponsored by the Student Government Association, the College Union Board, and the International Student Organization.

Yoga lessons by Michelle Ricker of Mahalakshmi Yoga will be given in the Compass Point Clubhouse at 7:00 P.M.

Tuesday, November 19
On Tuesday, November 19, Melody Ortiz, a native of Venezuela, will give Latin dance lessons beginning at 11:30 A.M. in Shearouse Plaza.

The Diwali Festival of Lights, an observance from India, will be presented in the Compass Point Clubhouse beginning at 7:30 P.M.

Wednesday, November 20
A Native American Month celebration will lead off activities on Wednesday, November 20. The program of Native American singing, dancing and storytelling will be held at noon in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Sponsorship is by the Office of Minority Affairs.

At 3:30 P.M., Olga Medvedeva will speak on "Siberian Connections with the U.S." in Room 201 of Gamble Hall. Medvedeva is an exchange professor from a state university in Siberia on the AASU history faculty.

An evening of international student performances will take place Wednesday in the Compass Point Clubhouse at 7:00 P.M. AASU students represent some sixty-seven foreign countries and many of them will participate in this program of music and dancing. The annual foreign fashion show will be one of the evening’s highlights.

Thursday, November 21
A Study Abroad Fair will lead off the schedule for Thursday, November 21. College representatives will explain the numerous summer overseas study opportunities available to interested students in the University Hall Atrium beginning at 11:00 A.M.

For those who missed the first Latin dance lessons, Melody Ortiz will return with more at 11:30 A.M. in Shearouse Plaza.

Thursday’s events conclude with a Hispanic dinner and a dance performance by Panamanian Pride in the Memorial College Center Cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and may be pre-purchased from the Office of International Education

The Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival will be held Monday through Friday at various times and locations throughout the campus. The festival offers a wide variety of handicrafts made in villages throughout the world. Items are reasonably priced and the proceeds are returned to the artisans.

All events are open to the public and are free with the exception of the Hispanic dinner.
