Twenty Gifted Middle School Students from Charles Ellis to Tour AASU Gardens, September 30

Savannah, GA--September 28, 2005--A group of 20 gifted middle school students from Charles Ellis Montessori School will be given a guided tour of the Arboretum at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) on September 30. The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Primitive Garden located near Jenkins Hall at AASU.

The students are taking advanced science and math courses and have been asked to design a series of gardens for the front of Charles Ellis. The gardens will serve as an outdoor learning environment for all of the grades at their school. The students will observe a variety of gardens at Armstrong Atlantic and also visit other gardens in the Savannah area to get ideas for their designs.

The students have installed a pond, which will become a part of the new gardens. Eventually, they will add butterfly and botanical gardens, and a terraced garden in a location that is currently eroding. Additionally, the students are exploring the process of composting.

Phillip Schretter, grounds superintendent for AASU, will describe how the university designs, organizes, and implements the different collections in the Arboretum. As part of the tour, he will take the group to the Primitive Garden, the Fern Garden, and the Camellia Garden. The tour will conclude with visits to the Ginger Garden and the International Garden. Shretter will show the students interesting plants in each of the collections and talk to them about labeling and mapping the collections.
