Three AASU Grads Win Georgia Power Grants

(September 2, 2008) Three 2008 Armstrong Atlantic State University graduates have been selected to be recipients of Georgia Powers New Teacher Assistance Grants. Each will receive a $1,000 stipend to purchase supplies for their classrooms.

The three recipients are Kurt Browning, Billy Lee, and Sarah Trawick. Browning is teaching at Martha Puckett Middle School in Jesup, GA; Lee is teaching at Southwest Middle School in Savannah; and Trawick is teaching at Joseph Martin Elementary in Hinesville, GA.

Patricia Wachholz, dean of AASU's College of Education said, "I am continually encouraged by the classroom talent that comes from education programs at Armstrong Atlantic. We are very proud of the three Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grant recipients who are working very hard to be the best they can be for their students, their colleagues, and their schools. The Georgia Power grants provide important support for these promising, young teachers."

The New Teacher Assistance Grants are given to students from each of the 15 colleges and universities in the state of Georgia that offers a degree in education. Each institution nominates up to five students for the grant, and Georgia Power selects the recipients.

This year 35 students were chosen from across the state of Georgia.

An awards luncheon will take place on September 13 at the Georgia Power corporate headquarters in Atlanta, where these new teachers will be officially recognized for their achievements.
