The Southern Economic Association Honors Cebula![]() (November 28, 2007) Dr. Richard J. Cebula, professor of Economics at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), was recently honored with the prestigious Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award by the Southern Economic Association. Presentation occurred November 20, 2007 during SEA's annual conference held in New Orleans, LA, featuring distinguished guest lecturer Dr. James A. Robinson. The Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association annually honors one or more faculty members for outstanding contributions to economics education. Ken Elzinga, Robert C. Taylor Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia,--first recipient of the Cavaliers' Distinguished Teaching Professorship--is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished, effective, and influential educators in the economics profession during a distinguished teaching and research career at the University of Virginia, that has spanned over 35 years. Ken is creative and versatile in the classroom sharing his thoughts effectively with large groups of students studying the principles of economics, and using the Socratic Method, when working with students in a more advanced setting. He is a pioneer in the use of literature to explore economic reasoning which led to his writing murder mysteries that can be solved by careful economic analysis. Ken's style of instruction and commitment to helping students develop an understanding of and appreciation for economic reasoning and insights serve as an inspiration for economic educators, so it is fitting for exemplary economic educators to be honored with an award in his name. Dr. Cebula is the Shirley & Philip Solomons Eminent Scholar at AASU. His extraordinary teaching efforts, effectiveness, and accomplishments on behalf of students span a period of more than 35 years, including his experience at Ohio University, Emory University, Georgia Tech, and AASU. Depending upon the class being taught, he uses a combination of traditional classroom lectures, Power-Point presentations, transparencies, written homework assignments, internet-based assignments, and an always present heavy dose of patience to impart his knowledge. Student responses to his efforts are, to say the least, enthusiastic. Dr. Cebula also actively encourages students to pursue original research. Still more impressive is the way that Dr. Cebula involves students in research projects. These efforts have resulted in more than two dozen student-only or joint-authored publications in refereed Economics or Business journals. Dr. Cebula has received two Omicron Delta Epsilon "teacher of the year" awards and an MBA "Outstanding Teacher Award." He has also been recognized as Teaching Fellow of the Academy of Economics and Finance. We commend him for his remarkable effort and achievements. Unlike most previous years, Dr. Cebula is this year's sole recipient of the award. The Southern Economic Association has the second largest membership of any association of professional Economists in the world. The Kenneth Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award is the highest award recognizing teaching in the Economics profession. |
