Students Attend Model U.N. Conference

(Savannah, GA, May 2, 2007) Six Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) students recently attended the 2007 National Model United Nations Conference (NMUNC) held in New York City. The AASU team was awarded an Honorable Mention Delegation award for their excellence in preparation, presentation, and professionalism.

The AASU team represented the Principality of Liechtenstein, a small landlocked country in Western-Central Europe. The participating AASU students were John Coburn, Rachel Porter, Don Moone, David Barrientos, Erica Daly, and Keely Collette. Michael Hall, associate professor of history, served as the team's advisor.

The NMUMC is the largest United Nations simulation program in the world. During the 2007 conference, on March 20-24, it hosted nearly 3,500 students from 225 colleges and universities from around the world. Since 1968, the annual conference has presented a forum for university students to discuss global concerns in a context that closely parallels the real workings of the United Nations.

Students and faculty debate world problems and propose resolutions addressing such topics as regional conflicts, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment.

During the conference the students met with their assigned four committees, debated important issues on foreign policy, and presented position papers. They proposed legislation to alleviate global hunger and secure international funding. Conference sessions began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 11 p.m.

The closing ceremony was held at the United Nations' General Assembly Hall, at the same time that the U.N. Security Council was holding an emergency session to debate the possibility of imposing sanctions on Iran.

The National Collegiate Conference Association sponsors the NMUMC. The trip was made possible by financial support from The Armstrong Atlantic State University Foundation, Sea Island Bank, the AASU College of Arts & Sciences, and the Department of History.
