Student Research Symposium Awards


(June 2, 2008) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) has announced the winners of its 2008 Student Research Symposium. The14th annual symposium highlighted the results of creative and scholarly work by graduate and undergraduate students at Armstrong Atlantic.

The five winning projects in the undergraduate division are:

Ivan Sopin and Donna Bryant, department of computer science, "Online External Beam Radiation Treatment Simulator." Sopin and Bryant received a $500 award. Felix Hamza-Lup, assistant professor of computer science served as faculty advisor.

Ashley Brown, engineering studies, "Design of An Automobile Tension Mechanism." $350 award. Cameron Coates, assistant professor of engineering studies, served as faculty advisor.

Sheree Sheppard, Carolyn Belcher, Matt Richardson, and Lauren Broome, "Mutation Mysteries: Analyzing Malformations among Loggerhead Sea Turtle Embryos." $200 award. Kathryn Craven, assistant professor of biology, served as faculty advisor.

Valerie Jordan and Jennifer Brickle, "Stem Cells in Dentistry." $100 award. Kimberly Coulton, assistant professor of dental hygiene, served as faculty advisor.

Carlos Sanchez, Ivan Sopin, and Patrick Hager, "A fresh VIEW: Virtual Interactive Engineering on the Web." $50 award. Priya Goeser, assistant professor of engineering studies, Wayne Johnson, assistant professor of engineering studies, and Felix Hamza-Lup, assistant professor of computer science, served as faculty advisors.

The two winning projects in the graduate category are:

Adrian Anderson and Chelsea Roberts, "Everett J. Foxx Student Case Competition." $500 award. Joey Crosby, associate professor and coordinator of the master of health services administration program, served as faculty advisor.

Ferheen Ahmed, Kosha Joshi, and Marleigh Russell, "Emergency Department Crisis Resolved." $350 award. Joey Crosby, associate professor and coordinator of the master of health services administration program, served as faculty advisor.

Overall, the event attracted a record number of nearly 70 submitted projects on all aspects of the arts and sciences, education, and health professions.

The AASU Faculty Research & Scholarship Committee sponsored the event. Groups and individuals who contributed to the success of the symposium are:
