The public is invited to view the student projects from 6-7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22. An awards ceremony will follow from 7-8:30 p.m. Both events are open to the public. SORSEF is a regional science fair open to students in grades six through 12 in Chatham, Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Long, Screven, Tattnall, and Toombs counties. More than 225 children from 35 private and public schools are expected to participate. They will compete in junior and senior divisions and several project categories, including engineering, environmental science, and chemistry. The fair provides a forum for teachers and academics to encourage students to investigate science and engineering problems and ways to solve them. Through their projects, students learn organizational and logistical approaches to solving complex problems. The top 10 percent of scorers will go on to compete at the 2008 Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Athens in April. The top winner in the senior division will compete at the International Fair in Atlanta in May. Faculty members in science and engineering from AASU, Georgia Tech, Savannah State University, and South University will serve as judges. Also serving as judges are representatives from Arizona Chemical, Gulfstream Aerospace, and Tronox. Area companies and organizations are invited to support the regional fair by sponsoring local awards, purchasing advertising in the program, and making donations. Students may be recognized for outstanding work with plaques, logo items, or cash awards. For further information about the fair call 912.272.5375 or email sorsef@armstrong.edu. |
