Poetry and Film Coming in December


AASU Hosts Poet James Kimbrell

(Savannah, GA-November 29, 2006) Author James Kimbrell will read from his latest book, My Psychic: Poems, (2006) on Tuesday, December 12, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Armstrong Center Ballroom B, 13040 Abercorn Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Kimbrell is the recipient of numerous literary awards, including a 2004 National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, the 2003 Florida Arts Council Individual Artist's Grant, and the 2000 Walter E. Dakin Fellowship. He is currently the director of the Creative Writing program at Florida State University.

Born in Jackson, MS, Kimbrell holds degrees from Millsaps College, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Virginia, and the University of Missouri. He is the author of The Gatehouse Heaven, his first collection of poems.

AASU to Screen "J.P. Donleavy's Ireland"

(Savannah, GA-November 29, 2006) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will screen "J.P. Donleavy's Ireland," a film about the author's tour and opinions of his ancestral country. The showing is on December 13, at noon in AASU's Gamble Hall 200, on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street.

This event is free and open to the public.

Donleavy is an Irish-American author, born in New York to Irish immigrants. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after which he moved to Ireland. He gained critical acclaim with his first novel, "The Ginger Man," which is one of the Modern Library 100 best novels.
