NSSE Survey: AASU is Academically Challenging, has Supportive Campus

Savannah, GA-January 25, 2006-Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) announces the results of the 2005 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). NSSE is co-sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning. AASU was one of 21 Georgia colleges and universities that participated in the survey.

In the categories of "Level of Academic Challenge" and "Supportive Campus Environment," sampled students reported scores that are significantly higher than the average benchmark scores for the other 20 Georgia institutions, and also for students at other masters level institutions similar to Armstrong Atlantic.

"The survey shows that first-year students have frequently (often or very often) worked harder than they thought they could to meet instructors expectations," said Katherine Bennett, interim director of Institutional Research at AASU. "They also reported that the institution emphasizes spending significant amounts of time studying and on academic work."

AASUs first-year students average mean score (55.2) for the level of academic challenge is significantly higher than the average benchmark scores for first-year students in the other 20 Georgia institutions. Bennett says "the comparison shows that AASU first-year respondents to this survey perceive Armstrong Atlantic as promoting higher levels of student achievement, and as setting higher expectations for student performance than do similar students at other Georgia institutions."

Additionally, the mean score for first-year students (60.7) for the category of "Supportive Campus Environment" is significantly higher than the Georgia System mean (55.8). Eighty percent of first-year students sampled believe that AASU emphasizes support for academic success.

The 2005 NSSE survey findings are further supported by an AASU exit survey conducted for undergraduates who were graduating in 2005. In the category of "Level of Academic Challenge," over 93% of students surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that AASUs core curriculum improved their ability to speak and communicate effectively to others, develop effective methods of finding and evaluating information from a variety of sources, write effectively at college and professional levels, objectively draw conclusions based on presented information, and read critically at college/professional levels.

In the category of "Supportive Campus Environment," 93% found it easy to transition into AASUs environment and 83% found it easy to make friends.
