Mullenax Earns Science Teacher of the Year Award(February 12, 2008) Donna Mullenax, an instructor of astronomy and physics at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), has been named the 2008 College Science Teacher of the Year for Georgia by the Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA). Mullenax joined Armstrong Atlantic in 1999 and has been active in working with an outreach program under AASU's Department of Chemistry and Physics. The program brings science demonstrations to elementary and middle school students in Chatham County and surrounding counties and provides academic support to k-12 science teachers. In the summer of 2007, Mullenax facilitated a workshop allowing a group of teachers to travel around Georgia visiting different landforms. In 2004, the AASU ROTC named Mullenax their Professor of the Year. Asked about what the GSTA award means to her, Ms. Mullenax said, "I am very honored and humbled by the award. The Lord has blessed me in giving me a strong academic foundation, a great job, and wonderful colleagues." Mullenax earned a bachelor's in mathematics, physics, and secondary education at West Virginia University. She holds a master's in physics from Clemson University. Each year GSTA recognizes excellence in science teaching through the Science Teacher of the Year awards and recognition program. The award recognizes excellence in the teaching of science and a commitment to its improvement. Outstanding achievement in elementary, middle, and high school science teaching is recognized with the selection of a state winner. The science teachers of the year will be honored at a special awards banquet on February 15, 2008. This awards and recognition program is part of the annual GSTA Science and Leadership Conference to be held at the Classic Convention Center in Athens, GA, February 13-15. |
