Mullenax Presents Faculty Lecture January 18(December 18, 2007) Donna Mullenax, instructor of physics at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), will discuss student-centered instruction on Friday, January 18, at 12:10 p.m., in University Hall 156, on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. "Studio physics: Moving toward student-centered instruction," is part of the 2007-2008 AASU Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series. All presentations are free and open to the public. Students often are anxious about college physics because they consider the subject very difficult and the passing rate is not great. Traditionally, physics is taught in an instructor-centered classroom where the students are note takers and listeners. For the past three semesters, studio physics, which moves the course to a student-centered classroom and combines the lab and lecture, has been piloted at AASU. How has this student-centered approach affected the level of student learning and the passing rate in algebra-based physics? Will this method improve students' understanding of conceptual physics and problem solving? The answer to these questions and results of similar studies conducted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, and the University of Central Florida, and other institutions will be discussed.
