Moot Court Team Heads to National Finals(December 19, 2007) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will defend its 2007 American Collegiate Moot Court Association (ACMA) national championship during a tournament to be hosted by Drake University Law School in Des Moines, IA, January 18-19, 2008. AASU will field the team of recent graduate Jessica Gay and senior Edric Kirkman. Although the team fell short of gaining an automatic bid to the finals, the Gay-Kirkman team was selected as one of the highest ranked teams scoring outside of the top 25 percent in the Southeast region. Only teams scoring in the top 25 percent in each region received an automatic bid. "We were the highest ranked team that didn't get an automatic bid to the finals," said Paul Mullen, AASU assistant professor of political science and one of three team coaches. At the national finals, 64 teams will debate the 2007 case of the United States v. William DeNolf on the issue of the right to bear arms. Jessica Gay graduated from Armstrong Atlantic in December 2007 with a bachelor of arts in political science. A resident of Douglasville, GA, she is eligible under ACMA regulations to represent AASU in the finals. Edric Kirkman, a senior studying political science, is from Honolulu, Hawaii. Mullen and Becky da Cruz, assistant professor in Criminal Justice, Social and Political Science, along with Savannah attorney Joseph Steffen, with Miltiades & Steffen, serve as team coaches.
