José da Cruz to Present Faculty Lecture March 7(February 29, 2008) Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) associate professor of political science, José de Arimatéia da Cruz, will discuss the Japanese influence on the Brazilian landscape during a faculty lecture at 12:10 p.m., Friday, March 7 in University Hall 156, on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. The event is free and open to the public. "The Japanese in Brazil: 1908-2008" is part of the 2007-2008 AASU Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series. First arriving in 1908, the Japanese were the last of the large immigrant groups to reach Latin America, following the immigrant waves from Southern Europe and the Middle East. Da Cruz's presentation chronicles the Japanese economical, social, and cultural influence on Brazil 100 years after the arrival of the first Japanese in the country.
