Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation Awards Grant

(April 9, 2008) Mark Anthony Douglas, a student in the Master's in Adult Education and Community Leadership program in Armstrong Atlantic State University's College of Education, was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation. A ceremony to present the award will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, April 11 in the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn Street.

The grant will assist Douglas and his student peers to present on-campus seminars to benefit My Brothaz Home, a community-based organization that provides HIV and STD prevention programs to residents of Savannah. The first seminar will be presented on April 14 and will be offered through AASU's Caribbean Student Association.

In December 2007, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation selected AASU Master's in Adult Education and Community Leadership (AECL) program for the prestigious honor of becoming a host to the foundation. The AECL program was selected based on its history of successful student-led civic engagement and for the ongoing opportunities available for students to become involved in the design of community partnerships with non-profit organizations.

The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation will provide two $1,000 scholarships each year to students in the program who engage in innovative and promising partnerships with non-profit community organizations. Grants will be awarded every spring and fall semester.

"Since Savannah has one of the most rapidly increasing infection rates of HIV and other STDs in the state, Douglas and My Brothaz Home have planned a student friendly seminar to bring the latest medical information and preventative techniques to our community," said Patricia Coberly, graduate coordinator for the AECL program.

Every student in the graduate program is required to work with a community organization to determine educational needs. Students then plan, implement, and evaluate a project to assist the community based on those needs.

Former programs have included an open house to introduce the St. Mary's Community Center and the various programs it offers to the community; the establishment of a neighborhood-based library; developing strategies for teaching adults with learning challenges; and presenting workshops to help parents of toddlers.

Sister Pat Baber, director of St. Mary's Community Center in the Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood, has been a close partner and supporter of the students and the work they have done leading to this award.

Ellen Hatcher, executive director of Rebuilding Together Savannah, helped compiled the data and history of AASU student projects at St. Mary's Community Center. Her work led to the Adult Education and Community Leadership program being selected as a host for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation.

The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation provides grants and awards to recognize the best practices in campus-community partnerships and the best new ideas for student-led community service learning. The foundation includes a number of strategies to foster and support academic service learning projects between campus and community organizations. The hallmark strategy is the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration. This program began in President & Mrs. Carter's home state of Georgia in 2000.

Administered by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation, the grant is sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and seeks to foster academic-service learning at American colleges and universities. The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation recognizes the best academic-service learning work of university students and faculty as they partner with community groups and community agencies.
