Immigration Law is Topic of Film, Panel Discussion at AASU

(Savannah, GA-March 6, 2007) The Hispanic Outreach and Leadership (HOLA) at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will host a screening of the documentary film "Fighting Senate Bill 529," at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, in University Hall 157 on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street.

A panel discussion about the documentary and the effects of the new law will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Governor Sonny Perdue signed SB529, also known as "The Georgia Security and Compliance in Immigration Act" into law on April 17, 2006.

Filmmaker Garrett Dehart used the words and images during a massive demonstration against passage of the bill in April 2006 in Dekalb County as the backdrop of his documentary.

"Fighting Senate Bill 529," explores the political, legal, and human battles that preceded the bill's passage and which continue today. The film features commentary from a variety of Hispanic leaders in Georgia and dramatic footage from protest marches that were held last spring.

The immigration panel will include Paul Harris, a political scientist and immigration specialist from Augusta State University; Savannah immigration attorneys, A.J. Balbo and Chett Gregg; Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials; Debra Sabia, associate professor of political science at Georgia Southern University and founder and director of the Center for Latino Outreach and Research Services; and Paul and Carol Groeschel of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network.
