HunterMaclean Moot Court Established at AASU

(June 19, 2009) HunterMaclean, one of Georgia's prestige law firms, has established the HunterMaclean Moot Court at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU). HunterMaclean has made a 10-year commitment to the successful program at the university.

John M. Tatum, managing partner at HunterMaclean said, "AASU is a vital part of this community and of the state university system. Many of our people and the people we serve are AASU alumni. We at HunterMaclean are grateful to Tom Jones and his leadership team for this opportunity. We are proud to be a part of Armstrong Atlantic, particularly its highly successful moot court program which, I am happy to say, will carry our name."

AASU President Thomas Z. Jones said, "HunterMaclean has been a strong supporter of Armstrong Atlantic's Moot Court team since inception, providing financial support and professional expertise as mentors to our students. It is truly gratifying that HunterMaclean has ensured the future of our moot court initiative through its generous gift."

In 2007, an Armstrong Atlantic team won the National Moot Court Championship in Virginia Beach, VA. AASU students have competed in classroom Moot Court and have represented the university at regional and national competitions since 2002. Beginning in 2005, Armstrong Atlantic has hosted the Southeastern Undergraduate Moot Court Tournament. Teams have gathered at AASU from Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida and Arkansas. AASU has won the moot court regional competition in two out of the last three years.

Moot Court develops students' communications skills, including skill in listening, questioning, legal writing and analysis, oral argument and public presentation. The skills they learn are good preparation for graduate study whether or not they go on to legal careers. Each year, the students are prepared for competition by working with faculty advisors and a team of volunteer attorneys from the community.
