Grant Supports Book on African American Servicewomen

(Savannah, GA-May 10, 2007) Elizabeth Desnoyers-Colas, assistant professor of speech and communication at Armstrong Atlantic State University, has received a $6,000 summer publishing grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The grant will support Colas' work on a book about African-American women's service in the Persian Gulf.

As a recipient of the award, Colas joins the 2007-2008 class of American Fellows representing a group of exceptional women whose work promises to enhance such divese disciplines as philosophy, neuroscience, and anthropology. AAUW selected 88 fellows from a pool of 1,036 applicants.

Colas, a retired Air Force major, spent three years collecting the stories of women and continues to gather oral histories from veterans and those serving in the current conflict. She plans to complete the book this summer.

The narratives of the African-American women touch on issues as varied as healthcare, children, career advancement, religion, combat experiences, and sexual harassment.

Colas got the idea for the book after watching news coverage of Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch who was captured by Iraqis in 2003. Her story received considerably more coverage than that of other war captives, including Spc. Shoshana Johnson, who became the first black female prisoner of war that same year.

The grant will allow Colas to focus on the final writing of the project, editing, and responding to critical reviews of the work before publication.

Since 1881, the AAUW has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls. AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.
