Fourth Annual Bloomsday Celebration Slated by AASU Irish Studies Club

Savannah, GA - May 30, 2006 - The Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) Irish Studies Club will present its fourth annual Bloomsday Celebration at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at Kevin Barry's Pub, 117 W. River Street.

The evening will feature Frank Clancy, director of the club and AASU faculty member, speaking on and reading from James Joyce's Ulysses.

Bloomsday is a celebration of the works of Joyce, especially his ground-breaking (and, some say, impenetrable) novel, Ulysses. June 16, 1904, was the single day covered in that novel by the character Leopold Bloom. Observances in Ireland include retracing the character's steps in Dublin. Elsewhere, fans mark the day with literary lectures, food, and drink.

Clancy has been on Armstrong Atlantic's faculty since 1974. Among the courses he teaches is one on modern Irish literature, which covers Joyce's works. He founded the Irish Studies Club four year ago. During two years of post-graduate studies in Ireland, he spent at least one Bloomsday in Dublin, but noted that the observance has grown significantly worldwide since then.

The Bloomsday Celebration is free to the public, although those who attend are responsible for their own food and drink. For more information, call Clancy at (912) 921-5624.
