Former Secretary of State Cathy Cox to Speak at AASU(Savannah, GA-March 7, 2007) Former Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox will speak at 7 p.m., Friday, March 23, in the Armstrong Center Ballroom, 13040 Abercorn Street. Cox, a gubernatorial candidate in 2006, will speak on the challenges facing women leaders. The event is free and open to the public. Cox's keynote address - "Women in Leadership: Can we talk... substance?" - is the highlight of Armstrong Atlantic State University's "Major Event," a daylong kickoff of the university's new academic offering, a bachelor's degree in Gender and Women's Studies (GWST) to be offered in fall 2007. Cox is currently serving a one-semester appointment as the Carl E. Sanders Political Leadership Scholar at the University of Georgia Law School. The day's program includes information sessions about the new major from 1 - 2:30 p.m. and presentation sessions from 2:45 - 5:30 p.m. Information sessions will cover curriculum, the compatibility of GWST with other majors, and career opportunities in the field. The presentation sessions will serve as a forum for students in GWST classes to present research and to discuss their own perspective on the major. AASU's program in GWST has heretofore offered a minor and a certificate. Starting in the fall, AASU is one of only three public universities in Georgia to offer a bachelor of arts degree in the field. Gender and Women's Studies draws upon various perspectives of human experience in areas as diverse as literature, history, art, political science, sociology, and psychology. The demand for graduates with a background in the study of gender and women's issues is growing. Professionals in the field are required to develop and implement programs designed to address problems of violence against women, illiteracy, and inadequate healthcare. "Since the approval of the minor and graduate and undergraduate certificates in women's studies in 2000, student demand for GWST classes has been strong," said Teresa Winterhalter, program director.
