Main Page Contact Francisco Duque, 912.961.3173 For Immediate Release Economics Students Have Strong Presence at International Conference(March 17, 2008) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) economics students set a new participation standard at the Academy of Economics and Finance conference held in Nashville, TN in February. In the undergraduate category, of the 20 non-Ph.D. students from across the world who presented papers, 10 were from AASU, including two recent graduates. Each of the AASU students presented papers they had developed in their senior thesis class, under the direction and mentorship of Richard J. Cebula, the Shirley & Philip Solomons Eminent Scholar. The participating students and the paper titles are: Callie Beevers, "The Determinants of 2001 Fertility Rates" Alexis Brewer, "Determinants of Female Labor Force Participation" Jennifer Hinman, "Inflation Determinants in the U.S., 1973-2005" Carlos Arzayus, "Determinants of Inner City Cost of Living Differentials, 2005" Jay Carmichael, "Determinants of NHL salaries for the 2006-2007 Season" Marc Noble, "Average MLB salary Determinants, 1963-2006" Shyam Menon, "Military Enlistments: A Penel-Data Set Analysis" John Coburn, "Determinants of the Delinquency Rates by State for the Fourth Quarter, 2006" Sarah Link, "Abortion in the United States" Tatyana Zelenskaya, "Migration and Crime Rates in the U.S." Michael Toma, associate professor of economics, who served as student paper coordinator, and Richard McGrath, associate professor of economics, conferred with some of the students on their final drafts. McGrath was elected to serve as the academy's president-elect for 2008-2009 and as president for 2009-2010. Toma was elected to serve on the academy's board of directors. Cebula, with co-authors Toma and Jay Carmichael, an AASU economics major, presented "Determinants of Attendance at Minor League Baseball Games: The Case of the Carolina League." Cebula, who serves as editor of the Journal of Economics and Finance Education, was appointed to chair a committee to investigate the start-up of a new scholarly journal, The Journal of the Academy of Economics and Finance. He also serves as associate editor of the academy's other scholarly journal, The Journal of Economics and Finance. |
