Savannah, GA - May 15 - Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will play host Friday, May 19,to a South American folk music group whose exuberant music will provide a glimpse of the life and culture of the people of the Colombian-Venezuelan grasslands or savannas.

Los Llaneros (los yah-NEH-ros) will perform the traditional cowboy songs rarely heard outside their South American homeland Llanos or savannahs. The group will present an educational program for area schools at 9 a.m., and an evening concert at 8 p.m. Both events will be at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the AASU campus, and admission is free. The City of Savannah and the Hispanic Outreach & Leadership Program (HOLA) are funding the performances. For more information, call 912. 921.7337 or email ortizmel@mail.armstrong.edu.

Llanero music is known for its intricate rhythmic exchanges among instruments and its virtuoso techniques. Its themes revolve around love, nature, and the simple yet rich life of the people of the Colombian-Venezuelan grasslands.

The group Los Llaneros features renowned harpist and composer Rene Devia, who has won numerous awards in his native Colombia; the gifted voice of the blonde, blue-eyed Llanera Karin Stein; and multi-instrumentalist and maraca specialist Edgar East, who adds flash and flair to the ensemble.

Tradicion Latina, a local dance group, will accompany the ensemble to perform authentic Llanero dances.
