Authors, Educators Will Gather at AASU For Coastal Georgia Writing Project Annual Conference


(Savannah, GA - October 25) More than 25 national, state, city, and local authors and educators will gather on Armstrong Atlantic State University's campus for the Coastal Georgia Writing Project's (CGWP) annual conference on Friday and Saturday, November 10 - 11 in the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn Street in Savannah.

The conference's schedule is Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. and Saturday from 8:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. A reception for presenters will be held Friday from 4:15 - 6 p.m.

The workshop falls on Veterans Day Weekend to allow teachers to participate without missing school time. This year's theme, "Voices from the Coast: Navigating the Tides of Teaching," will offer two full days of interactive workshops, seminars, and lectures. The conference brings together education leaders, principals, and administrators from public and private schools throughout coastal Georgia and South Carolina.

"Training the trainer and helping teachers to teach writing is what this conference is all about," said Pat West, director of the Coastal Georgia Writing Project at AASU.

The conference highlights include:
  • Linda Christensen, keynote speaker and author of "Reading, Writing & Rising Up"
  • Susan Catron, executive editor, Savannah Morning News and Marjorie Young, president, Carriage Trade Public Relations, will deliver a workshop, "Career Path for Writers: How to Get Paid for Writing!"
  • "Flocabulary," as featured on MTV, will deliver a workshop and performance on "Shakespeare is Hip-Hop."

Other presenters include Dr. Scott Wilson, Georgia Department of Education, Standards Unit-Builders, and Jerry E. Fluellen, Jr., Gadsden Performing and Fine Arts Academy.
