(March 20, 2009) Armstrong Atlantic State University alumnus Clyde Tucker will present a lecture, "Election Projections: How We Got Here and Where We're Heading," on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in University Hall 156 on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Tucker's presentation will highlight the importance of election projections in the American political system, which became apparent in the 2000 presidential election. The lecture will begin by revisiting what happened during the incorrect calls in Florida in 2000, as well as look at the 2004 election. Tucker will present a brief history of election projections prior to 2000 and will conclude with thoughts about the 2008 presidential election season in particular and the future of election projections in general.
Tucker graduated in 1971 from then Armstrong State College with a major in political science. He began his career as the assistant manager of CBS News polls, where he worked on the design and analysis of exit polls. Since 1984 he has served as a statistical consultant on national election decision desks for television networks. He managed the decisions teams for Voter News Service from 1994 to 2002. In 2004, 2006 and 2008, he headed the decision desk for CNN. The network won an Emmy Award for best coverage of a breaking story for its 2006 election night coverage.
In addition to his degree from AASU, Tucker received a master's in statistics and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Georgia.
