AASU to Host Annual High School Math Tournament

(Savannah, GA-February 13) More than 400 students from some 30 high schools from Georgia and South Carolina are expected to participate in Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) 29th annual High School Math Tournament on Saturday, March 3. The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in AASU's Fine Arts Auditorium.

"The finest math students from each state will participate in the two-part competition," said Dale Kilhefner, professor of mathematics at AASU. "The tournament encourages a more challenging and competitive interest in math among high-achieving students from the region's high schools."

The competition will cover multiple-choice and ciphering, or problem solving. Participants will work individually on the multiple-choice section; teams of four will be given 10 problems to solve in the ciphering section. The competition will conclude with a paper airplane contest with participants competing for both accuracy and distance.

An awards ceremony will follow to recognize the top-ranking schools and individuals in both the varsity and junior varsity competitions. In addition, the top winner will be announced for each grade from nine through twelve.

AASU's Department of Mathematics and the School of Computing co-sponsor the event.

The tournament is publicized mainly in Georgia and South Carolina, but is open to all high schools. The deadline for registration is February 23. Online registration is available at www.math.armstrong.edu/tournaments.
