AASU to Host Science Bowl January 27

(Savannah, GA-January 8) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will host 35 top-performing science and math high school students in sub-regional competition on January 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Science Center on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street.

As one of five host institutions across the state, AASU will welcome two teams each from Appling County High School, Frederica Academy, Statesboro High School, and Richmond Hill High School.

The students will compete in a "Jeopardy" style contest that features all areas of science and mathematics. Students are allowed five seconds to respond to complex math and science questions using only pencil and paper.

Host institutions in the other four sub-regions are University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, Valdosta State University, and Georgia College and State University. More than 40 high school teams compete statewide.

The top 12 to 16 teams from the five sub-regions will return to Armstrong Atlantic on February 24 to vie for a spot in the 17th annual National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. on April 26-30.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Bowl aims to encourage students' involvement in math and science activities, improve their awareness of career options in science and technology, and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward academic achievement in science and mathematics.

Since 1991 more than 100,000 high school students and their teachers have participated. More than 12,000 students compete each year, making the National Science Bowl the nation's largest science competition. Sixty-five regional competitions are held around the country from January to March.
