Main Page Contact Michelle Gordon; 961.3173 For Immediate Release AASU to Host Conference on Women's Leadership: The Art of the Possible, March 2-4Savannah, GA-February 1, 2006-Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) Gender and Women's Studies Program is hosting its fourth annual conference, "Realizing Women's Leadership: The Art of the Possible," March 2-4 at Hilton Savannah DeSoto. The conference features over 75 panelists who will explore over 25 topics related to leadership from diverse areas-such as politics, business, culture, and the environment. "A thread of thematic unity for the conference might be understood as examining the art of the possible," said Teresa Winterhalter, conference coordinator and director for Gender and Womens Studies at AASU. "We hope to open conversations that pursue women's empowerment and plant the seeds for the next generation of women leaders." The keynote speakers are Grace Paley, Poet Laureate of Vermont, and Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate studies and professor of Art History at The Maryland Institute and College of Art. Paley's address will begin at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 3. King-Hammonds address will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 4. Savannah's own African-American Dance Troupe, Sankofa will perform beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2. Among the many featured panels on Friday, March 3, will be a roundtable discussion entitled, "Leadership in Economic Development: Does Gender Matter?" which will begin at 10:30 a.m. Later that day, a tour of the studios of three Savannah women artists will begin at 1 p.m. Another panel discussion, "African-American Women in the Lead," will begin at 2:30 p.m. Following, Mayor Otis Johnson will honor three women leaders in local politics who will discuss the challenges and successes in their work. At 4:30 p.m., a panel will honor Elizabeth Torrey West and discuss "The Ossabaw Island Foundation and Its Educational Alliance." Immediately following, keynote speakers Paley and King-Hammond will participate in a conversation, "Planting the Winter Rye," beginning at 5:15 p.m., with a reception to follow.
