AASU to Host Opportunity Fair, October 14 -

Savannah, GA--September 27, 2005--Men and women who are looking to upgrade their current jobs, or are displaced workers who want to take the next step toward entering the work force, are invited to participate in an Opportunity Fair, "Tackling Today's Job Market with Confidence," on October 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop is being hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) and will be held in room 156 of University Hall.

The Association of A Working Woman In Need, Inc. (AWWIN), is presenting the workshops for adults who are at least twenty-one years old. AWWIN is a part of Savannah's Poverty Reduction initiative.

Free transportation will be provided, but childcare will not be available. Seating is limited, so those interested are encouraged to register early. The workshop is free and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be served, and door prizes will be given away.

"The workshop is designed to provide timely information about the job market in Savannah and surrounding counties," said Sarahlyn U. Argrow, founder and executive director of AWWIN. "For those returning or entering college or technical training, the workshop will provide the steps needed to begin pursuing their careers."

Several major employers will make presentations about the labor and administrative positions that are currently being filled at their companies. Employers will discuss how individuals are advancing within their organizations through the combination of education and work-related experience. Representatives will present the application process and give examples of individuals who started in service positions and moved into professional careers within the same organizations.

The employers who will be present during the workshop include: The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL), Memorial Health University Medical Center, Georgia Pacific, International Paper, The Hyatt, Royal Staffing, and the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education. The GDOL will provide demographic information on industrial growth, occupational trends, and wage rates. Staying informed of these trends is increasingly important to remain competitive in today's marketplace.

For those interested in starting or resuming their education, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah State University, Savannah Technical Institute, and Coastal Georgia Community College will provide information about their programs, admissions policies, and financial aid services. Representatives will provide current information on the majors that are most in demand among major employers.
