AASU students to display competition art at Leopold's Ice Cream

(Savannah, GA, April 9, 2007) Nineteen Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) graphic arts and photography students will display their entries in a poster competition sponsored by the Friends of Johnny Mercer (FJM) April 11-25 at Leopold's Ice Cream, 212 East Broughton Street. Most of the entries will be on display in the window, while some may be seen inside the store.

Members of the FJM wanted to involve the students at Armstrong Atlantic in the Mercer legacy. This led to discussions between the Mercer group, the Lane Library, and the AASU Department of Art, Music & Theatre.

Angela Horne, an assistant professor of art, tied together the various interests involved by creating an assignment for the students in her new corporate logo and identity design class. They were challenged to produce posters promoting the collection. She also asked them to create ideas for a new FJM logo, related print materials, and imprinted apparel. The students were required to make a competitive presentation of their designs to "the client," the Friends of Johnny Mercer.

AASU junior Jamie Almond won the competition and a check from the FJM. His poster is also on display with the collection in the Lane Library. In addition, the works of all 19 students were put on display in March during a special event at the Armstrong Center, "A Night to Remember Johnny Mercer."

The seeds for the competition were sown when AASU's Lane Library opened a display featuring selected materials from the Mercer Family Collection. The collection, archived at the university, is a growing cache of letters, family photographs, diaries, memorabilia, and film and video clips made possible by the FJM. Nancy Mercer Keith Gerard, a Mercer niece, was the first to donate items to the archive. Members of the FJM have been donating to the collection ever since.

Dianne Thurman, of the Friends of Johnny Mercer, made arrangements with Leopold's Ice Cream to give further exposure to the students and their submissions.

Horne's class included Jamie Almond, Seth Bailey, Brandi Carter, Miriam Cox, Jamaal Galloway, Christopher Gibson, Diana Holliday, Jennifer Incorvaia, Jessica Jenkins, James Jordan, Raphyel Jordan, Samuel Lim, Ryan McDonald, Johnathan McPeters, Robert Merchant, Michael Newman, Karla Spier, Jacob Swindall, and Jennifer Wickstead.
