AASU's Medical Technology Program Turns 25

(April 22, 2009) The Medical Technology Program in the College of Health Professions at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) marks its 25th anniversary in 2009. As one of two such programs among the University System of Georgia's 35 institutions, AASU's program has shown strong growth since 2000.

The number of full-time faculty members has grown to five, the number of graduates that have emerged from the program climbed to 38 from four; the current number of students majoring in medical technology is up to 84 from 12; and the number of clinical sites where students can conduct their required practicum has increased to 25 in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. The program offers in-state tuition agreements with students residing in South Carolina.

Students who hold a two-year degree and who are working in the medical technology field can opt to pursue a bachelor's degree in medical technology, which can be completed in 15 months.

"It's a great way for medical laboratory technicians already in the field to get their four-year degree, which could help impact their salary very significantly," said Hassan Aziz, department head.

Under Aziz's leadership, the program has garnered national and international recognition. "Labs are Vital," an international organization that supports laboratory professionals recently awarded a $25,000 grant to the AASU Medical Technology Program. AASU's was one of ten programs selected from across the country.

Recently, an international track with Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore was established to allow degreed, qualified students in Singapore to apply for enrollment to the medical technology program and attend the AASU campus.

Students in Singapore who hold a 3-year degree under the British program can apply to AASU to earn a bachelor's degree in medical technology, which they can complete in one year.

"Students in the program come from every corner of Georgia, South Carolina and now we are on track to building our program in Singapore,” said Aziz who joined the program as a faculty member in 2000 and was named department head in 2003.
