AASU's HOLA part of Latino Summit at UGA

Savannah, GA—February 14, 2006—Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) Hispanic Outreach & Leadership Program (HOLA) participated in the first Latino Organization Summit held at the University of Georgia in January. Delegates met to begin building a framework for future collaborative work among Latino and Latino-serving organizations across the state.

Participating from AASU were Melody Ortiz, recruiter and advisor for HOLA, HOLA Student Club officers Bertha Hernandez and Carlos Arzayus, and club members Claudia Valencia, Nancy Ucuhuaranga, and Luis Ruiz. They teamed with several other Latino student organizations from around the state to share ideas on employment opportunities and networking. The AASU representatives joined more than 150 delegates, representing nearly 80 organizations and agencies from around the state.

Other participants included the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO), the Georgia Hispanic Network, the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. One third of the organizations represented were not Latino-specific, but had outreach efforts that targeted the Latino community. The summit leaders included Jerry Gonzalez, president of GALEO; Priscilla Nieves, president of GHNet; and Jo-Anne Martin Sanders of the Edison Group. Governor Sonny Purdue sent a letter of acknowledgement and appreciation for taking action and determination for the support of a better Georgia.
