AASU's Cyber Security Research Institute Receives Federal Funding

(March 30, 2009) Armstrong Atlantic State University's Cyber Security Research Institute (CSRI) has received $428,000 in federal support to continue to prepare law enforcement personnel and students for emerging cyber security threats. Congressman Jack Kingston, a strong supporter of the CSRI, helped secure the funding. Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss also supported the funding.

"Armstrong has taken the lead in this important field and I'm proud to provide this support in their efforts," Kingston said. "The work theyre doing is so good that that the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center which trains the Secret Service and Capitol Police, among others, sends folks up here for training. This is exactly the kind of work we need in our educational institutions and the benefits will be felt across our country."

Randy Grubb, executive director of CSRI, said, "When Congressman Kingston first visited us, he immediately saw the need that we could fill by educating the next generation of cyber security professionals."

The CSRI, located on the AASU campus, provides subject matter expertise in cyber and homeland security issues in highly specific academic courses, training and research and development projects. The institute is one of the first of its kind in the nation.

"By bringing the foremost experts out of the field and into the classroom, CSRI is developing the most cutting edge program of its kind," said Grubb. "This funding will elevate the current certificate in cyber affairs and security to a full master's degree track within the criminal justice program at AASU."
