AASU's Arens to lecture on The Jews of Estonia

Savannah, GA—February 1, 2006—Olavi Arens of the Department of History at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), will give a lecture on "The Jews of Estonia: Reflections on 20th Century History," as part of the Robert Ingram Strozier Faculty Lecture Series on February 17. The lecture will begin at 12:15 in room 156 of University Hall. It is free and open to the public.

While less than 5,000 in number, the Jews of Estonia experienced in fullness the promise and tragedy of 20th century world history. The community organized itself following the creation of an Estonian state in 1918-1920, and was granted full cultural autonomy in 1925. All was interrupted by World War II, which brought to the Jews new trial and tribulations in the form of a radical Soviet occupation policy, and then Nazi Holocaust policies. Yet, the returning survivors maintained their Jewish consciousness, traditions, and a measure of hope of emigration to Israel. The post-Soviet reality is that of a diminishing Jewish community in an Estonia that is a member of the European Union.
