AASU Writing Project to Host Nationally-Recognized Speakers

Savannah, GA--October 18, 2005--The tales of Brer Rabbit, Southern folk tales, and the humor of Shel Silverstein's poetry will come to life when nationally known storyteller Josie Bailey performs next month for the Coastal Georgia Writing Project (CGWP) of Armstrong Atlantic State University at its Conference on the Teaching of Writing. Since 1993, Bailey has toured the United States to share the art of storytelling.

To add to the excitement, author Dawn Latta Kirby plans to motivate educators and parents with fresh ideas like the "Imagination Game" and "Word Impressions," just right for implementing the new Georgia Performance Standards. Kirby is a professor of English at Kennesaw State University and co-author of Inside Out: Strategies for Teaching Writing, which she penned with her husband and senior author Dan Kirby and co-author Tom Liner.

Bailey will perform at a reception and mini-workshop from 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, November 4, at the Savannah History Museum, while Kirby will deliver the keynote address that will kick off a day of workshops at 9:30 a.m. on November 5 at the Coastal Georgia Center for Continuing Education for educators, students, parents, and policy-makers involved with literacy.

The theme for the conference is "Whatever it Takes: Raising Writers, Readers, and Standards in the Village." With a takeoff on the African proverb that "It takes a village," CGWP believes that educators must be ready to try innovative practices in order to reach and educate today's children while balancing their needs with the need to push standards.

The conference will present best practices in writing across the curriculum based on the models and principles of the National Writing Project, of which CGWP, a non-profit, tax-exempt program, is one of 182 affiliates in the country. The workshops will feature presentations by area teacher consultants in language arts, math, reading, reflective writing, technology, and coaching new teachers. Dan Ailes of Bartow Elementary School will lead participants on a writing "marathon" through downtown historic Savannah during one of the sessions.
