AASU Welcomes Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

Savannah, GA - April 9, 2006 - Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) initiated its first membership class in Phi Kappa Phi in ceremonies on campus Sunday, April 9.

The initiation was in University Hall's Room 156, followed by a reception in the University Hall Atrium.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. It has chapters on close to 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The group was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine.

Armstrong Atlantic's petition for a chapter was approved unanimously last fall by the Board of Directors of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, following campus visits by Perry A. Snyder, executive director of the organization, and Marya Free, a national board member.

Sandra Holt, vice president for the Southeast region of Phi Kappa Phi represented the national organization at the initiation ceremony at Armstrong Atlantic. She is an associate professor of communications and director of the University Honors Program at Tennessee State University.

Membership is by invitation only, with criteria limiting invitations to the top 7.5 percent of the second semester juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students.
