Main Page Contact Francisco Duque, 912.961.3173 For Immediate Release AASU Students to Debate Patriot Act(Savannah, GA, April 9, 2007) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) political science students will debate the balance between freedom vs. security and the issue of presidential abuse under the Patriot Act starting at noon, Friday, April 13, in the Ashmore Hall Auditorium on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. The event is free and the public is invited. The students will debate the following proposition: As a result of 9/11 the president has demanded and received an unwarranted amount of power through the Patriot Act, which weakens the checks and balances of our system of limited government. Judicial review under Title II Sec. 215 of the Patriot Act is nothing more than a rubber stamp giving the executive branch virtually unchecked power to seize personal information, thereby undermining our constitutional liberties and weakening our national security. Elizabeth Desnoyers-Colas, assistant professor of speech/communication at AASU, will moderate the event. It is being sponsored by AASU's Department of Criminal Justice, Social, and Political Science. For more information, contact John Kearnes at 912.921.5678, or email kearnejo@mail.armstrong.edu. |
