Main Page Contact Michelle Gordon; 961.3173 For Immediate Release AASU Student Group, Planned Parenthood to Pass out Condoms for Valentine's DaySavannah, GA—February 13, 2006—Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA) and Planned Parenthood of Georgia will distribute free condoms and reproductive literature to AASU students this Valentine's Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Shearhouse Plaza. Representatives will be on hand with information about sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, contraceptive choices, healthy sexuality, and, of course, condoms. Many Americans, particularly college students, underestimate their risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI). According to Planned Parenthood, approximately 15 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections are diagnosed in the United States each year. Two-thirds of these cases occur among young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Research has shown that correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of STI transmission. In 1978, National Condom Week was created to coincide with Valentine's Day in order to remind couples to use condoms to prevent the spread of STIs. Condom use has become even more important with the emergence and spread of HIV/AIDS beginning in the 1980s. AASU's FMLA and Planned Parenthood of Georgia believe that engaging in mature dialogues about sexuality and sexual health is the key to ensuring one's own sexual health and that of children.
