Two New Academic Programs--Doctor of Physical Therapy and Cardiovascular Interventional Track in Radiologic Sciences--Graduate Inaugural Classes
(April 24, 2009) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will hold its spring commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Arena in the Savannah Civic Center, 301 West Oglethorpe Avenue.
Approximately 692 candidates to receive degrees are expected to be on hand, representing the university's College of Education, College of Health Professions, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Technology and the School of Graduate Studies. The university will award approximately 568 bachelor's and 124 graduate degrees.
This year the university will present degree candidates in two new academic disciplines. AASU, in consortium with the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), will award doctorate degrees to fifteen students in the inaugural class of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, the first doctoral program offered by the university. Roman Cibirka, vice president for instruction and associate provost for academic affairs at MCG, will be present at the ceremony.
The cardiovascular interventional track in the radiologic sciences program also will graduate its inaugural class, with nine candidates for bachelor's degrees. The program was established under cooperative agreements and financial support from St. Joseph's/Candler, Memorial University Medical Center, and the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. The academic track provides state of the art education specific to the areas of cardiovascular diagnosis and intervention.
AASU President Thomas Z. Jones and senior members of the university administration will confer the degrees. Mark Worsham, Class of '77 and past president of the AASU Alumni Association, will deliver the welcome address to the new graduates. The AASU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mark B. Johnson, will provide the musical accompaniment. Lucinda D. Schultz, professor of music, will lead in the singing of the national anthem and the university alma mater.
