AASU Spring Enrollment Up 5.1 Percent

Graduate Enrollment Jumps 16.3 percent

(March 19, 2009) Armstrong Atlantic State University's enrollment for spring 2009 reached 6,833, an increase of 333 students or the equivalent of a 5.1 percent increase from a year ago. The university's graduate enrollment reached 940 students, a growth of 16.3 percent from last spring.

"Armstrong Atlantic State University's enrollment continues to grow as more students recognize that we offer an education that is not only of the highest quality, but affordable as well," said L. Russell Watjen, AASU associate vice president of enrollment management.

The university's growth is also strong at its Liberty Center campus in Hinesville, where spring enrollment reached an all-time record of 1,288, an increase of 20.1 percent from the same time last year.

Joseph Weaver, director of AASU's Liberty Center campus, attributes the growth there to a number of factors. "It is a combination of convenient class times being offered during the days, evenings and weekends, increased course offerings, flex term scheduling and a reputation for quality," he said.

In addition, a growing awareness of the Liberty Center coupled with current economic conditions are contributing to more traditional-aged students staying closer to home and more non-traditional students returning to school for career advancement reasons.

In Savannah, the growth of the main campus is made palpable by construction currently under way for a new $20 million, 60,180 square-foot Student Union to be completed in 2010. Recently completed campus upgrades include the renovation of Jenkins Hall and the Fine Arts Auditorium at a total cost of $5 million.
