AASU Recognizes Outstanding Staff Members(June 12, 2008) Armstrong Atlantic State University recognized its outstanding staff members during the university's year-end Leadership Awards ceremony. Vickie Dyer, secretary in the Department of Biology, received the Staff Member of the Year Award; Laurel Logue, assistant director of international education, received the Spirit of Armstrong Award; and Jonnie Chandler, coordinating director for the School of Computing, received the Volunteer Service to the Community Award. Dyer joined Armstrong Atlantic in 1999 and has provided invaluable support to the Department of Biology over the last nine years. "She is clearly dedicated to our students," wrote one faculty member in nominating Dyer for the award. Another wrote, "Although her job title is restricted to secretary, she is also a friend, mentor, and counselor." Dyer has the honor of being nominated six times for this award. More than 30 students in her department signed a letter of nomination this year. The Outstanding Staff Member of the Year Award recognizes full-time, hourly staff members for their valuable contributions to the university. Logue came to Armstrong Atlantic in 2002. She advises international students and faculty on immigration regulations. She is the driving force behind AASU's yearly International Week, a campus event that showcases the university's international and multicultural students. Each year Logue has led International Night in the Garden during ArmstrongFest, bringing to the campus performing artists who are known internationally. Logue is an integral part of the International Student Organization on campus, bringing students together from a variety of cultures to promote cultural awareness, education, and tolerance. The Spirit of Armstrong Award recognizes non-hourly, full-time staff members who exemplify the AASU spirit through service to students, faculty, and staff in fulfilling the vision of the university. Chandler joined Armstrong Atlantic in 1992. She worked in various capacities prior to joining the School of Computing as office manager and executive assistant in 2003. She is a tireless advocate for U.S. troops serving abroad. Most recently, she organized "Operation Armstrong Cares," a campus-wide effort involving more than 100 volunteers. The operation delivered nearly 100 boxes of supplies to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chandler also established a scholarship at North Georgia College and State University to provide annual tuition to a cadet on track to be commissioned in the U.S. Army. This is the first year that the Volunteer Service to the Community Award was presented. The award recognizes a full-time staff member for exemplary volunteer service to the community. |
