AASU Hosts International Week November 4-8(Savannah, GA, October 30, 2007) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will host its seventh annual International Week from Sunday, November 4, through Thursday, November 8. The weeklong celebration of international culture is free and the public is invited. All events will be held on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. AASU's Office of International Education hosts International Week with the support and direct involvement from AASU's international students, representing more than 70 countries. Cultural activities, musical performances, and international foods will be part of the festivities. "International Week on the AASU campus provides an opportunity for the entire community to have a glimpse of international cultures and sample exquisite cuisine," said Laurel Logue, assistant director of international education. This year's schedule is: Sunday, November 4 2-5 p.m., International Garden International Cultural Festival featuring Rhythmic Motivation with Jim Donovan A sidewalk festival showcasing countries represented by AASU international students and faculty though food, music, cultural exhibits, and clothing. Rain Location: Memorial College Center Cafeteria Tuesday, November 6 11:30 a.m., University Hall 156 "Making Peace with Many Truths: The War You Won't See on TV" Lorna Tychostup is the senior editor of Chronogram Magazine and a freelance journalist and photographer. Since February 2003, she has visited Iraq four times. Her photographs of Iraq and its people have been exhibited throughout the country. 8 p.m., Memorial College Center Dining Room Comedian Edwin San Juan performs. San Juan is one of the most successful Filipino comedians working today. Wednesday, November 7 1:30 p.m., Fine Arts 206 Africa: Luba Ritual and Art Deborah Jamieson, assistant professor of art history, will present a lecture on Luba ritual and art. Located in the southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba artists are recognized for their production of figural sculpture. This lecture will discuss specific examples of Luba sculpture and their function within society. Thursday, November 8 10 a.m., Armstrong Center Auditorium Issues pertaining to the Crisis of Political Succession in Africa Dr. Olayiwola Olurode, professor and Fulbright Scholar at the University of Lagos in Nigeria, will give a talk on the challenges of political succession in Africa.Dr. Olurodes visit is in collaboration with the International Education Center at Savannah State University. 1 p.m., Solms Hall 108 The Role of Women in Islamic Societies Professor Olurode will present. 6:30 p.m., University Hall 157 International Movie: "La Grande Vadrouille" (the Great Walk) The AASU Cercle Francais will host a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed by the screening of the movie at 7 p.m. For more information, call the Office of International Education at 912.921.5671. |
