AASU Honor Society Inducts 107 New Members


(Savannah, GA-November 30) The Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) Chapter 297 of the national honor society Phi Kappa Phi inducted 107 new members during an initiation ceremony in November. The chapter also welcomed several AASU faculty members into its fold and bestowed membership honors on one AASU alumnus and a distinguished member of the Savannah community.

Stephen S. Green was inducted as a distinguished member of the Armstrong Atlantic Chapter, an honor bestowed only after approval from the society's national board of directors. AASU President Thomas Z. Jones presented Green with his membership certificate, praising him for his dedication to higher education, Armstrong Atlantic, and the Savannah community.

Green is president and CEO of Stephen Green Properties. He is chairman of the Savannah Chamber's 200th anniversary celebration and is vice chairman of the First Chatham Bank Board of Directors.

Another Armstrong Atlantic alumnus, Richard D. Edwards, also received special recognition at the ceremony. Chapter President Camille Stern presented membership honors to Edwards, noting that he has earned distinction as an outstanding Armstrong Atlantic alumnus whose achievements also reflect the society's motto: "Let the love of learning rule humanity."

The following faculty members were invited into the organization: Jewell Anderson, Charles W. Belin Jr., Sherri Lynn Cunningham, June Hopkins, Michael Patrick Mahan, and Linda Jeanne Tuck.

These new Armstrong Atlantic Phi Kappa Phi members join approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni nationwide to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi this year.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, LA, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on nearly 300 select college and university campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of graduate students and seniors and only the top 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction may also qualify.
