(May 1, 2008) Robin Jones, associate director of student activities and judicial affairs at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), was honored with the Sigma Sigma Sigma Greek Advisor of the Year Award.
The national women's sorority Tri Sigma honors a college or university advisor every year for contributions to the Greek system on campuses that have an active Tri Sigma chapter. Members of Eta Rho, the local Tri Sigma chapter at AASU, nominated Jones for the award.
"AASU is extremely pleased that Sigma Sigma Sigma honored Robin Jones for her contributions to Greek life, said Vicki McNeil, vice president of student affairs who presented the award to Jones. "Robin has been instrumental in building the Greek community on campus and she is highly respected by our fraternity and sorority leaders. This award was well deserved."
Tri Sigma presented a $500 grant in honor of Jones to the AASU Foundation, which designated it to the Nick Mamalakis Emerging Leader Scholarship. Tri Sigma is a national American women's sorority with membership of more than 92,000 members. They are members of the National Panhellenic Conference and host chapters on more than 110 college campuses and 88 alumnae chapters in communities all over the world.
AASU's Tri Sigma chapter has a membership of 42 women. In the spring 2008, the chapter was involved in hosting every home game for AASU men's and women's basketball, serving refreshments for sponsors and guests. The chapter raised money and awareness during a community service project to benefit St. Baldrick's, a volunteer-driven fund raising initiative for childhood cancer research. The chapter has also adopted a team of U.S. Rangers currently stationed overseas and is corresponding with that team until its return home.
"This award is very special to me because it comes from the students," said Jones. "I feel as though we have gone through this process of re-introducing Greek life to this campus and this award lets me know that it has been rewarding and valuable to these women."
