AASU Foundation Elects New Officers


(Savannah, GA, April 18, 2007) The Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) Foundation announces the election of community leaders Jerry Barton as chair; Robert A. Colvin as vice chair; Ann R. Purcell as secretary; and John M. Mamalakis as treasurer.

The purpose of the AASU Foundation is to acquire and administer funds and gifts that support the university and its programs. The officers and board of directors regulate and supervise the activities of the foundation.

Jerry Barton is the city president for Sea Island Bank in Savannah. He joined Sea Island Bank in February 2004 to lead their entrance into the Savannah market. Barton began his banking career in 1969 and has continued his entire career in Savannah serving in various executive positions.

Barton serves on the board of directors of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and Union Mission. He is a member of Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Council and Savannah Rotary West. He is a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University.

Robert A. Colvin became president and CEO of Memorial Health in Savannah in 1997. Memorial Health is a $525 million integrated healthcare delivery system that includes Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC), a 530 bed teaching and research hospital; two rural community hospitals; homecare services; air and ground ambulance services; primary and specialty care physician practices; and a major teaching and research program.

Under Colvin's leadership, MHUMC has been named a Distinguished Hospital by J. D. Power and Associates; one of Fortune Magazine's 100 Best Companies to Work for; and one of Hospitals & Health Network's 100 Most Wired Hospitals. MHUMC also is the recipient of the American Hospital Association's prestigious NOVA Award, and one of U. S. News & World Report's Top Hospitals in orthopedics, endocrinology, and respiratory disorders.

Prior to joining Memorial Health, Colvin served as vice president of Georgia group operations for Quorum Health Resources, Inc. He was also president and CEO of Gritman Medical Center and Palouse Regional Health Corporation, both in Moscow, Idaho. Colvin holds a bachelor's degree in business management and a masters in business administration from Idaho State University.

Ann R. Purcell is a published genealogist and the office manager for Radiation Therapy Associates, P.C. She serves on the Georgia Board of Technical and Adult Education and co-chairs the Georgia Joint Education Liaison Committee. Purcell serves on the Effingham County Adult Literacy Advisory Committee, the Georgia Art Commission Policy Committee, and the Effingham YMCA Board of Directors, where she is campaign chairperson.

Purcell is a member of the Georgia Genealogical Association, the Effingham Historical Society, and the Georgia Salzburger Society Board of Trustees, where she currently serves as president. Shes also active in the Georgia Sheriffs Association and the Hope Scholarship Study Commission. She served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from January 1991 until January 2005 and is a former member of the Effingham County Cancer Society Board of Directors.

While a member of the Effingham Rotary she became a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. She was nominated for Whos Who of American Women in 2003, Whos Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 2004 and Whos Who in America in 2003 and 2005. Purcells biography appeared in Whos Who of American Women 2006 and has been selected for inclusion in the new 2007 edition. Purcell has been honored by the Herald Staff & County Citizen as 'One of the 10 Top Women of Effingham County.' She received her bachelor's degree in education from Georgia Southern College.

John M. Mamalakis is the program manager for the Georgia Restaurant Mutual Captive Insurance Company. He is president of the Savannah Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter Society. He has been a licensed insurance agent for 34 years, beginning with Mercer Insurance Agency in 1973 and continuing with HRH Insurance (formerly Jones, Hill & Mercer. He is member of the board of Raising our Children Kindly (ROCK) Group.

Mamalakis is a former trustee and treasurer of the Savannah Baptist Center and former president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Savannah.
