AASU Foundation Names Three Community Leaders to the Board


Savannah, GA-March 3, 2006-Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) has named three community leaders-James B. Benton, M.D., Mark C. Clayton, D.D.S., and Mary E. Vernick-to its Foundation Board.

James Benton, M.D., practices radiation oncology for the Northside Hosptal Cancer Center in Atlanta and the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia in Decatur. He also serves as assistant professor of radiation oncology at the Emory Clinic in Atlanta. His research interests include skin cancers, breast cancer, and brachytherapy for lung, prostate and gynecological cancers. Benton served in the U.S. Navy from 1975 to 1979. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from AASU and an M.D. at Morehouse School of Medicine.
 
Mark Clayton, D.D.S., started a private practice in Hinesville in 2002. He began serving as an oral surgeon at D.C. General Hospital training Howard University and Georgetown University residents in 1998. While at D.C. General he was promoted to director of dental ambulatory anesthesia. After his residency, Dr. Clayton served as chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Winn Army Community Hospital. He completed his military service at Fort Stewart and received the Army Commendation Medal as a Major in the U.S. Army. He earned a B.S. in Zoology from Howard University and a D.D.S. from Howard University College of Dentistry in 1990.
 
Mary E. Vernick is president of the board for The Landings Association and a member of the board for The Landings Company. She is a founding member of the Skidaway Community Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating educational and cultural activities for residents of the island. Vernick is a retired IBM executive. She graduated from Immaculata University with a bachelors in mathematics and from Winona State University with an MBA.
