AASU Faculty Lecture: Is Freedom of Speech Eroding in America?(Savannah, GA, October 15, 2007) Armstrong Atlantic State University's (AASU) 2007-2008 Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series will continue with "Abridging the Freedom of Speech: Political Correctness and the Rise of a New Social McCarthyism in America," on Friday, Oct. 19. The lecture begins at 12:10 p.m. in University Hall 156 on the AASU campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. This event is free and open to the public. Tony R. Morris, professor in AASU's Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy, will discuss the ways that citizens can protect themselves against the loss of free speech. The recent firing of shock-jock Don Imus and the more recent calls for censuring lyrics in hip-hop music, are seen as recent examples of America's move toward limiting free speech. Some argue that free speech is under attack in this country, and that the most surprising fact is that the trend is not only political, but also social. In other words, the people for whom the First Amendment was designed to protect are more and more willing to give up that freedom in the form of a new social McCarthyism called Political Correctness. In this talk, Tony Morris will underscore the importance of the First Amendment's right to free speech. For further information call 912.961.3173. |
