AASU Celebrates International Week November 5-10(Savannah, GA-October 19, 2006) Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) will host its sixth annual International Week from Sunday, November 5, through Friday, November 10. The weeklong celebration of international culture is free and the public is invited. All events will be held on the AASU campus, at 11935 Abercorn Street in Savannah. AASU's Office of International Education hosts International Week with the support and direct involvement from AASU's international students, representing more than 70 countries. Cultural activities, musical performances, and international foods will be part of the festivities. Handicrafts, marketed by Ten Thousand Villages, will be on sale throughout the week. Since 1946 Ten Thousand Villages, a nonprofit organization, has provided vital income to artisans from around the world by marketing their products and telling their stories in North America. Items from several different collections, including handmade musical instruments, paintings, and beautiful basketry will be for sale throughout the campus. Purchases will help skilled artisans in 30 countries receive a fair price for their handcrafted wares. "International Week on the AASU campus provides an opportunity for the entire community to have get a glimpse of international cultures, sample exquisite cuisine, and shop for unique home décor items that can't be found anywhere else," said Laurel Logue, assistant director of international education. This year's schedule is as follows: Sunday, November 5 International Festival 2-5 p.m. International Garden The International Festival is a sidewalk festival showcasing countries represented by AASU international students and faculty through food, music, and artifacts. Visual artist Richard Hight will paint on eight-foot canvases, choreographed to specially selected pieces of music. Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival 2-5 p.m. International Garden Monday, November 6 Dominic Gaudious Noon-1:15 p.m. Shearouse Plaza Instrumental guitarist and composer, Dominic Gaudious' unique and intricate playing style blends the sounds of classical, jazz, flamenco, folk, and world beats. He has performed at events all over the world, including the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and the Montreux Music Festival. Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Shearouse Plaza International Soccer Tournament 6-8 p.m. AASU Recreation Center Tuesday, November 7 Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival 9:30 a.m.-noon Gamble Hall Portico Understanding Italian Culture through Opera 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Fine Arts Room 206 Presented by Luca Bonomi, director of Dante Alighieri Institute in Siena, Italy. Bonomi will discuss Verdi's "La Traviata" and explain how the opera is embedded in Italian culture. Dinner Around the World (cooking demonstrations) 5-6 p.m. Compass Point Clubhouse International Soccer Tournament 6-8 p.m. AASU Recreation Center Wednesday, November 8 Ten Thousand Villages Festival 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Shearouse Plaza Jim Donovan of Rusted Root 12-1:30 p.m. Shearouse Plaza, Donovan is a current and founding member of the multi-platinum band Rusted Root. He has released three solo CDs and was a 2004 nominee for Electronica Album for the Year by Just Plain Folks Songwriters. He will share the power of rhythm with his Rhythmic Motivation interactive workshop. International Soccer Tournament 6-8 p.m. AASU Recreation Center Jim Donovan of Rusted Root 6-7:30 p.m. University Crossings (behind Bldg 900) Thursday, November 9 Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival 11 a.m.-3 p.m. University Hall Atrium West African Dance Workshop 5-6:30 p.m. AASU Recreation Center Juanita Adore-Lowery and Brenton Jordan will lead a West African dance workshop. International Soccer Tournament 7-9 p.m. AASU Recreation Center Friday, November 10 Ten Thousand Villages Gift Festival 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Memorial College Center University Dining Room Vijai Nathan, Comedienne 7:30 p.m. Memorial College Center University Dining Room Vijai Nathan will perform her one-women show, "Good Girls Don't, But Indian Girls Do." Her show is a hilarious and poignant exploration of the struggle to discover, create, and claim an Indian-American identity.
