AASU
Receives $5,000 Grant to Offer Aquatics Program for MS Patients
Savannah,
GA August 24, 2004Exercising in water is ideal for people
with multiple sclerosis (MS), as it prevents overheating, makes movement
easier, and enhances endurance. Starting September 9, Armstrong Atlantic
State University (AASU) will team up with TEVA Neuroscience (TEVA)
to offer an aquatic exercise program for MS patients.
Certified instructors who have knowledge of MS and related disabilities
will teach the classes and AASU physical therapy students will assist.
Classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. in AASUs
Aquatic and Recreation Center. The fee is $5 per participant per class.
Class size is limited.
"Aquatic exercise can increase aerobic capacity, strength, flexibility,
and balance. Even those who do not normally have use of their legs
can perform water exercises," said Jennifer Lander, associate
professor of physical therapy at AASU and program supervisor.
TEVA is sponsoring the program through an educational grant of $5,000
awarded to AASUs Department of Physical Therapy. The grant makes
it possible to create the program and offer classes at an affordable
cost.
