Groundhog Job Shadow Day: Over 70 Students to Shadow Health Professionals at AASU


Savannah, GA—January 30,2004—On Monday, February 2, over 70 high school students from Chatham and surrounding counties will visit the campus of Armstrong Atlantic State University for "Groundhog Job Shadow Day." The students will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. They have expressed an interest in health professions and will "Job Shadow" professionals in the respiratory therapy, physical therapy, nursing, and dental hygiene departments.

The most visual sessions will take place in the dental hygiene and respiratory therapy labs. Students will be able to try their hands at measuring lung capacity, collecting blood samples from an arterial puncture arm, and analyzing blood gases. State-of-the-art life support systems and other interactive equipment will be on display to stimulate the students' interest in medical and other healthcare professions. Other demonstrations will include intubation and airway care, ventilator technology, and spirometry.

The event is being sponsored by the Coastal Empire Technical Preparatory Consortium. Job shadowing is an academically motivating educational activity dedicated to giving youth an up-close look at the world or work. This gives young people a chance to see how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace.
