6 Year Old to Receive AMBUCS Tricycle at Open House

Savannah, GA—The Savannah AMBUCs will host an Open House on Saturday, August 2, to enhance awareness of the community service organization and its service programs. The event will be held from 2-3 p.m. at RJ's Steak and Seafood Restaurant, located at 434 South Main Street, in Statesboro. The event is open to the public.

During the Open House, AMBUCs will present an AmTryke tricycle to a 6 year-old boy from Alamo, Georgia. The AmTryke, powered by using the arms and legs, can improve the balance, coordination and self confidence of wheelchair bound children. As children ride the bike, there is a good chance their leg muscles will strengthen and their chances of walking will improve. The primary goal is to enable the child to walk as independently as possible.

The Savannah AMBUCs was named the top small club (fewer than 50 members) in the country for donating the most AmTrykes, which were originally designed for children with Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida. The Savannah chapter has donated more than twenty AmTrykes to disabled children throughout southeast Georgia.

AMBUCS works in partnership with Backus Children's Hospital Pediatric Rehabilitation Center, which is a demonstration site for the tricycle. Two AmTryke tricycles, large and small models, are kept in the center for therapists to evaluate their patients. The center makes recommendations on children who would benefit from using the tricycle.
Patients who can benefit from the tricycles are contacted by the Savannah AMBUC’s who arrange funding for the purchase of an AmTryke.

Contact Ross Bowers, head of AASU's Department of Respiratory Therapy, at 912.921.7446 for additional information. More information about the AmTryke is available at www.ambucs.com.
